Simpler Than It Seems
We promise it's simpler than it seems... Why our gender-free sizing labels should not scare you.
Skip straight to the part where we tell you the easiest way to pick your VC fit & size
In 2023, we announced that our transition to offering 100% gender-free fits was complete. This achievement was the result of years of thoughtful evolution, driven by our desire to live our values through product design, extensive community feedback, and a commitment to creating body shape-based fits.
Four years plus one pandemic later, we've finally done it. - March 7, 2023
The Reaction
We received an outpouring of heartwarming, encouraging feedback. Many people resonated with the reasons we shared when we began this journey in 2018—especially the idea that offering fits based on body shape and personal preference simply made sense. Our commitment to inclusivity was recognized as an important step forward.
At the same time, we empathized with those who found the transition challenging, particularly those frustrated by the process of figuring out which fit and size best suited their preferences.
Trust us, we know that your favourite jersey company changing fits and sizing can be a nuisance, but we're here to help you make the best decision every step of the way.
We knew the transition wouldn’t be entirely seamless—after all, nothing truly worthwhile ever is. But we stand by our commitment to removing arbitrary gender stereotypes from athletic apparel and fostering a more thoughtful, inclusive path forward in sport.
That said, for athletes who don’t feel personally impacted by this change, it doesn’t have to be a big deal. At the end of the day, VC delivers the highest-quality custom apparel on the market, and we’re here to make choosing your size as simple as possible.
The Right Fit & Size for You: The Classic
Step 1: Pick your Style
If you're looking for the VC style with the simplest conversion from traditional Men's and Women's sizing, and the options for customized body lengths, go with the Classic jersey.
Step 2: Pick your Fit
The Classic comes in two fits: Relaxed and Fitted.
- Classic Relaxed: This is VERY close to VC's previous Men's fit and sizing.
- Classic Fitted: This is VERY close to VC's previous Women's sizing but has evolved to offer a much more inclusive fit for all genders. Read all about the Classic's fit evolution here.
Step 3: Pick your Size
Sizing advice for the Classic:
- Classic Relaxed fit: Go with your standard men’s jersey size, or size DOWN one if you are in between. For example, if you like either a men’s medium or men’s large, you’ll be happy with a Relaxed Medium.
-
Classic Fitted fit: Go with your standard women’s jersey size, or size UP if you are a taller/thinner build.
- Lots of 5’10” 150lb MMP looooove the Fitted Large or XL. But, for the most part, if you have a player that’s listed as a women’s medium on your list, they’ll be happy with a Fitted Medium.
- If there are MMP who like/want to try the slimmer fit, go up 1 size for a slim fit and 2 sizes to be safe. It’ll still be more nicely slim than anything else out there.
Customized lengths: For the Classic, you can also choose a tall version, which adds 2" to the normal body length, or the short version, which removes 2" from the normal body length.
The Right Fit & Size for You: The Raglan
We've got blog dedicated just to the question Classic or Raglan: Which jersey style should my team choose?
If you're a fan of the Premier Ultimate League's jerseys from 2019-2024, the slimmer fitting Raglan jersey you know and love!
Step 2: Pick your Fit
The Raglan comes in two fits: Standard and Fitted.
The Raglan jersey is slimmer fitting than the Classic in part due to the double side seams, which create more tapering in the body (the Classic only has a side seam on one side).
- Raglan Standard fit: This has been a fan favorite across genders and is perfect for players who enjoy a slimmer jersey, especially if they have narrower shoulders and backs.
- Raglan Fitted fit: While the Fitted fit has the same base sizing as the Classic, the cut will fit differently due to how the shoulders hit and the side seams (the Raglan has a slight taper at the waist).
Step 3: Pick your Size
- Raglan Standard fit: If you typically wear a men's medium, you may want to order a Standard Large. The Standard fit is approximately one size smaller than our Relaxed fit, which is based on a median-sized men's shirt.
- Raglan Fitted fit: If you typically wear a women's medium, you'll likely choose a Fitted medium. However, you'll notice that the shoulders are roomier and the overall fit is less constricting. The Fitted fit tapers at the waist and is designed to hug the torso more closely than our Standard fit jersey.
Break it Down for Me
Still too much to take in? No problem—here’s the simplest way to think about it, based on traditional gendered sizing:
- Fitted = Women's
- Standard = Unisex
- Relaxed = Men's
While the intentionality behind our gender-free fits is anything but simple, we realized that it’s not as complicated as it seems, either.
